Are Your Immigration Rules Still Up to Date?

Level 0 - Thinking about a passport
Dec 21, 2023
When we talk about passports, visas, immigration rules, or citizenship paths, one detail often gets skipped but is actually critical: dates.

Entry rules, visa waivers, biometrics requirements, and citizenship criteria all change frequently, and often quietly. A post that was absolutely correct in 2021 might be flat‑out wrong today, or might only have applied to one specific nationality or region. That’s why, when sharing information, it helps to be explicit about two things:

1. Timeframe
- When was this rule in force?
- Is your information based on something you checked “this week,” “late 2023,” or “pre‑COVID”?
Adding even a rough date gives others a chance to judge whether they should treat it as current or historical.

2. Jurisdiction and scope
- Which country’s rules are we talking about?
- Does this apply to all nationalities, or just some?
Visa policy is extremely jurisdiction‑specific, and border officers typically enforce the most current version, not what used to be true.

Given how fast things move, it’s usually worth explicitly encouraging people to verify requirements directly with official sources (government immigration websites, consulates/embassies, or carriers) before they travel or submit applications.

How do you personally handle “dating” your information and flagging uncertainty when you post about passport, visa, or citizenship rules?
