Avoid duplicate replies to keep threads useful

Level 0 - Thinking about a passport
Dec 21, 2023
One thing that quietly harms the quality of many threads is duplicate replies: posts that restate the original question or repeat what’s already been said without adding anything new.

It’s not about having the “perfect” answer; it’s about making sure each new reply moves the conversation forward. When several people say essentially the same thing (“I agree,” “Same here,” or rephrasing an earlier point), it becomes harder for readers to:

  • Scan a thread for genuinely new information
  • Compare different perspectives or experiences
  • Identify unresolved issues or grey areas

A more helpful approach is to pause before posting and ask: what distinct point can I add? That might be:

  • Clarifying a nuance or exception that hasn’t been mentioned
  • Comparing pros and cons of a suggestion already given
  • Linking two earlier posts and explaining how they fit together
  • Posing a targeted follow-up question that invites more detail from the OP or other members

Even short posts can be valuable if they introduce a new angle or a cautious observation (for example, “This works in X region, but may not apply in Y because of different border practices.”).

How do you personally decide whether your reply is adding something distinct, and what habits have helped you avoid posting duplicates?
