Mozambique has fully implemented its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for visa-exempt travelers, ending the temporary suspension that had been in place due to technical issues.

Eligible travelers can now apply for an ETA before traveling to Mozambique for business or tourism. The development restores the country's pre-travel authorization requirement for visa-exempt nationals and marks the full rollout of the electronic system.

Travelers planning to visit Mozambique should ensure they obtain the required authorization before departure.

What Has Changed?

As of July 31, 2026, the Electronic Travel Authorization system is fully operational.

Visa-exempt nationals who are eligible for the program can now submit an ETA application before traveling to Mozambique.

The requirement applies to travelers visiting for:

  • Business purposes
  • Tourism

Obtaining an approved ETA before departure has once again become part of the travel process for eligible visitors.

Why Was the Requirement Suspended?

Mozambique initially introduced the pre-travel authorization requirement in April 2025.

The policy required visa-exempt travelers to obtain electronic authorization at least 48 hours before departure.

However, shortly after its introduction, immigration authorities temporarily suspended the requirement because technical issues prevented travelers from submitting applications through the new system.

During the suspension period, eligible visa-exempt nationals were allowed to continue entering Mozambique without obtaining an ETA.

With the technical issues now resolved, the authorization requirement has been reinstated.

Who Needs an ETA?

The Electronic Travel Authorization applies to eligible visa-exempt nationals traveling to Mozambique for:

  • Business visits
  • Tourism

Travelers who are not visa-exempt should continue following the standard visa requirements that apply to their nationality.

Visitors should verify their eligibility before making travel arrangements.

Why the ETA Matters

Electronic travel authorization systems are increasingly being introduced by countries to strengthen border management while simplifying entry procedures for eligible travelers.

For Mozambique, the ETA system is expected to:

  • Improve pre-arrival screening.
  • Enhance border security.
  • Streamline immigration processing.
  • Support more efficient travel management.
  • Reduce administrative processing upon arrival.

The electronic system allows authorities to review traveler information before entry while maintaining visa-free travel for eligible visitors.

What Travelers Should Do

Before traveling to Mozambique, eligible visitors should:

  • Confirm whether they qualify for visa-free entry.
  • Apply for the Electronic Travel Authorization before departure.
  • Ensure travel documents remain valid.
  • Review any additional health or entry requirements that may apply.

Submitting the ETA application well in advance of travel may help avoid delays.

Outlook

The activation of Mozambique's Electronic Travel Authorization system represents an important step in modernizing the country's immigration procedures.

With the temporary suspension now lifted, visa-exempt travelers should once again include ETA approval as part of their travel preparations. As electronic border management systems continue to expand globally, travelers are encouraged to stay informed about entry requirements before each international trip.
