Level 0 - Thinking about a passport
Dec 21, 2023
Passport “power” indexes get a lot of attention, but the way they’re discussed often generates more heat than light. It might be useful for this forum to clarify what a good, productive discussion of passport rankings should look like.

Most rankings are based on a simple metric: how many destinations a passport holder can enter visa‑free or with visa on arrival / ETA. Even within that narrow focus, there are big methodological questions:

  • Do they count eTAs and paid online pre‑clearance as “visa‑free” or as visas?
  • How often is the underlying data refreshed as countries change their entry rules?
  • Are temporary suspensions, diplomatic spats, or health restrictions reflected at all?

The practical impact for travelers can be very different from the headline number. For example:

  • A passport might rank “higher” but offer fewer options in the specific region a traveler needs for work or family.
  • Length of stay, right to work, and conditions on entry aren’t captured in a simple tally.
  • Dual nationals may find that their “weaker” passport is more useful in certain contexts (e.g., regional blocs).

Given this, discussions can be more valuable if they:

  • Stay analytical and source-aware: link to the specific index, explain its methodology, and note known limitations.
  • Avoid national pride or shaming: rankings reflect policies and reciprocity, not personal worth or “superiority.”
  • Focus on use cases: which passports are more practical for frequent travel to X region, or for short-notice business trips?

What aspects of passport rankings do you find genuinely useful for planning real travel, and which parts do you consider mostly noise or marketing?
