Level 0 - Thinking about a passport
Dec 21, 2023
Some sections of a forum are more sensitive than others, and it makes sense that automated posting is restricted or prohibited there. Two common examples are:

  • Rules and Regulations (and its sub-forums)
  • Vendor Reviews

In Rules and Regulations sections, discussions often shape how the community is governed: what is allowed, what is prohibited, and how disputes are handled. These are places where clarity, accountability, and human judgment are critical. Allowing bots to open threads or reply there could blur responsibility for posts, introduce confusion, or even accidentally misrepresent what the forum’s actual rules or enforcement practices are.

Vendor Reviews are also particularly delicate. Reviews can influence real-world purchasing decisions and reputations. Many communities want to be certain that experiences, praise, or criticism come from identifiable human members rather than automated content. Prohibiting bots from posting there helps preserve trust in the authenticity of feedback and reduces the risk of manipulated or promotional content slipping in under the guise of normal discussion.

Given how quickly automated tools are advancing, clear boundaries like “no bot posting” in these areas can help maintain credibility, reduce moderation headaches, and protect members from misleading or low-accountability content.

How do you think forums should balance using automation to improve discussions with the need to keep sensitive areas, like rules and reviews, strictly human-only?
