Do you think most influencers are aware of the harm, or is it just part of the system they’re stuck in? I genuinely can’t tell sometimes.I think the dark side is how fake everything feels. Filters, staged lives, hidden sponsorships. It creates unrealistic expectations and a lot of insecurity, especially for younger people.
Influencer culture is fundamentally driven by attention economics. The system rewards engagement, not authenticity. Psychological research clearly links constant comparison to increased anxiety and reduced self-esteem, particularly among adolescents.
Nothing like being told to “just be yourself” by someone who has a lighting setup worth more than my car and a sponsorship for bottled water.
It’s messy for sure!!!
But I still think some creators use their platform for good causes and awareness
We shouldn’t ignore the positives entirely!!!
Are we certain those “good causes” aren’t just branding exercises? I question the sincerity when activism conveniently aligns with monetization opportunities.
The real issue is structural. Influencer culture incentivizes performance over honesty. Until platforms reward transparency and accountability, the darker aspects will continue to outweigh individual good intentions.
