Level 0 - Thinking about a passport

On this forum, country-specific sections are designed to work differently from the main discussion areas: they are “comments only” and not for starting new topics. That setup sometimes confuses new members, but there are a few practical reasons it exists and it can actually improve the quality of information shared.

Immigration, citizenship, and consular rules are highly dependent on country, consulate, and even the time period and personal history involved. Allowing unlimited new topics for each country would quickly fragment discussions, repeat the same questions, and risk outdated or misleading advice being reused without context.

By keeping country-specific areas to replies only:

  • Information stays consolidated in existing threads, making it easier to see patterns and recent experiences.
  • Members are encouraged to read context and follow ongoing discussions instead of posting isolated questions.
  • It’s simpler to highlight that rules differ by country, region, consulate, date, and applicant profile, reducing expectations of “one-size-fits-all” answers.
  • Moderators can better manage content and keep threads focused and factual.

If you have a country-specific question, the usual approach is to find the most relevant existing thread and add your question or experience there, clearly stating your country, consulate (if relevant), and timeline. That helps others interpret replies correctly and compare similar cases.

How do you think we can best balance keeping country discussions organized while still making it easy for newcomers to find where to post their questions?
